Melbourne photographer Brent Lukey presents a workshop that’s designed to help artists better photograph and promote themselves and their artwork.

This workshop will be an informal, informative and intensive two hour session, with discussion and demonstrations that cover the essentials of photographing artwork – drawing, painting, sculpture and exhibition for social media and reproduction. Brent will answer all the dumb questions and provide real advice about how to better use your camera or camera phone with available light, everyday props and backgrounds.

So now we have the image, the next step is how to better use the image. In the second half of the workshop Brent will discuss and present visual storytelling, or more to the point, ways to better show off your artwork on social media, or your website, using graphic shapes, consistent light and colour, repetition, themes, less clutter, juxtaposition and ‘dumb moments’ that entice the viewer to click or swipe further.

Whether you are an emerging or established artist you will leave the session better able to photograph your work and tell more interesting visual stories.

Writing about art, a visual and visceral medium, can sometimes be difficult. As an artist, writing about yourself or your own work can be even more challenging. In this workshop for practicing artists, you will learn how art historians analyse a work of art, how to describe your own work in different contexts, and how to describe and market yourself as an artist. We will explore how creative process and biographical detail can deepen audience engagement, as well as how to write for specific occasions, such as gallery exhibitions, media releases or competitions.

Creativity and working in the arts requires vulnerability, innovation, energy, and commitment. Self-care is essential in this, but is often easier said than done. Navigating returning after the COVID break alongside the existing pressures of the arts industry, which are well-known, can impact our mental health. In these times of change how do you take simple, effective and meaningful steps towards self-care?
